Born June 8th, 1948, Gerald joined Watson Publishing in the early 1970’s shortly after returning from France where he had been working on an advanced degree in French naval history prior to the unanticipated closing and relocation of the archives. During his time with the company, he rapidly progressed from a clerk position to become senior editor prior to accepting a more lucrative appointment at Prentice Hall in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.

Mr. Lombardi, friend and colleague, died on April 15th, 2013. A memorial service was held at Le Zie Restaurant in New York City on Saturday, June 1st, 2013.

Beretta receives the Paul-Bunge-Prize from Professor Christoph Meinel, Regensburg.

The Gesellschaft Deutcher Chemiker and the Deutsche Bunsen-Gesellschaft für Physikalische Chemie present Professor Marco Beretta this year’s Paul-Bunge-Prize for his publication Alchemy of Glass: Counterfeit, Imitation and Transmutation in Ancient Glass Making at a ceremony in Heidelberg on March 21^st.

Edited by Ursula Klein and Carsten Reinhardt, the fifteen papers from the Chemical Heritage Foundation, Chemical Objects Workshop, will be collected in a volume entitled “Objects of Chemical Inquiry” to be published by SHP/USA later this year.

Including the speakers, thirty plus participated in a two and a half day conference (organized by Ursula Klein and Carsten Reinhardt) and sponsored by the Beckman Center, Chemical Heritage Foundation, Philadelphia.

Between Material Substances and Abstract Ideas: Chemists’ Objects of Inquiry, 18^th-21^st centuries 

Papers were stimulating and discussions often intense. Aside from the two organizers to whom particular thanks and appreciation is due, special credit must also be given to Ron Brashear and Carin Berkowitz of the Beckman Center whose commitment to the academic nature of the workshop and whose professionalism and hospitality were truly remarkable. How infrequently do contemporary public institutions live up to their theoretical commitment to the furthering of academic pursuits?
