The Road from Home

This book chronicles Heimar Niit’s journey from Estonia to ­America. His story gives voice to the 2024 80th Anniversary year of the Suurpogenemine (Great Refugee Flight of 1944).

The Road from Home is steeped in the history of the oppression of the Estonian people. Heimar escaped with his mother from Saaremaa, Estonia in September of 1944. With a strong work ethic and perseverance, he found freedom, joy, and fulfillment of his dreams in America. This personal memoir of a refugee’s struggles and daily life and ever-present gratitude will hopefully shed light on the current geopolitical climate to all generations.
