Best known as the surgeon in Oliver Hazard Perry’s squadron during the War of 1812 and as a participant in the Battle of Lake Erie, Parsons remained in the Navy for nearly ten years. After obtaining a degree from the Harvard Medical School in 1818, he separated from the service and settled in Providence, Rhode Island, where he practiced surgery and taught anatomy at the Medical School of Brown University until its dissolution in 1827. In 1820 he published a manual of sea medicine entitled the “Sailor’s Physician,” which went through several editions and remained a standard work in its field for much of the Thea century.
